MUSEUM MUSINGS by Jim Barnes The San Auto Museum Car Club Council had their monthly meeting on Mar 4th and yours truly attended, along with Goran Freske. I was introduced to some of the representatives from the more than the sixty car clubs that make up this organization. In the future, I will be the representative of the SDVSA, as Goran will be stepping down from his long tenure (since April, 1994) and taking a little break... My first impression of the meeting was, "Gee, there is a lot of car and motorcycle stuff going on here in beautiful San Diego..." One of the intents of the SDAMCCC is to get that info out, along with any other museum events that would be of interest to the motor vehicle hobbyists. They maintain a calendar of all the clubs' activities, and notification is given at each meeting for special community and charity events. As an example, representatives of the City of Coronado came to the meeting and gave their presentation for what they feel will be the biggest and best annual car show (Motorcars on Mainstreet) ever put on across the Bay. A plaque will be awarded to the club that shows up in force, however, in order to park together it was advised that clubs members and their cars should arrive at the same time. The show will be held in mid April and has all the right ingredients to be a great event, the date will be announced in the April newsletter, and some other details about the show along with it. As future events unfold, and from what I have heard, this summer is going to be filled with interesting events for the car buff, and I will try to get most of this information into our newsletter so you and your significant others - and Volvos - can participate. . The Car Club Council is also a clearing house for the latest smog and "clunker" legislation from Sacramento and Washington, D.C., and, just because SB42 passed, don't take anything for granted. There are forces at work right now to negate this bill, or at least modify it, and as car collectors and hobbyists, we should stay well informed and be ready to react to any old or new threats to our minor obsession. In October of 1997, the Council published the first issue of their 16 page newsletter, S.D.A.M. Car Club Council Courier, and the second edition is in work at this moment. The latest number will contain a short history of the SDVSA, and, hopefully, attract some more members to our group, since 4,000 copies were distributed throughout the San Diego area. You can pick up you copies at any of our regular second-Wednesday-of- the-month general meetings, or any scheduled SDVSA event. I would advice everyone to start shining those bumpers and fill up the gas tanks with the cheapest gas prices (that was another issue discussed and acted on by the CCC in past years) we've seen for awhile, because there are a lot of events coming up right here in town. |
