MUSEUM MUSINGS The monthly meeting of the San Diego Auto Museum Car Club Council met on Apr 1 st. No fooling, it did! The following are some of the topics that were discussed. Some of the members of the SDAMCCC are putting together a list of facts about the gasoline additive, methyl tri-butyl ether, MBTE. Apparently there are some signs of how this additive reacts to things like rubber fuel lines and other materials it comes in contact with. An additional area of concern was the coatings and sealers that are used in the restoration of gasoline tanks. It seems as the MBTE reacts with at least some coatings, dissolves them, and the resulting goop clogs the fuel lines in your sweet running 1800. Ah, modern technology! The immediate word is to keep fresh gas running through your fuel system and change out those old rubber fuel lines, which are good maintenance tips anyway. In the near future, a list of materials which are found on cars and their reaction to MBTE should become available, and we'll hopefully be able to post it here. For those of you who may not be able to attend the Bloomin' Desert Tour with the SDVSA on Sunday, April 19 (see page 2), but still want to get out and do something to satisfy your motor-mania, here are a few other planned events for that day. The "Motor Cars on Main Street" in beautiful Coronado takes place between l0am and 4pm at Isabella and Orange Avenues. This year's car show, open to 1972 and older vehicles, should prove to be even better than previous years with at least 150 cars. If you want to enter the show, or if you just want more information, call Paul ~ (he's a lieutenant on the Coronado police force!) at (619) 522-7848 You can start the morning off by attending one of the museum Car Club Council gatherings called a "Tire Kick" held in the parking lot in front of the Auto Museum in Balboa Park, starting around 9:30 a.m. and usually running 'til about noon. There will be free coffee and donuts, and you can stick around for a while and plan to visit the auto museum where the current theme on display is motorcycles from around the world. The "History of the Sports Car" show should also be in full swing by then, with our own Bud Hartwell's ES on display! And don't forget our special invitation to the auto museum on Friday, April 24, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. for a preview of this show (details on page 5). The San Diego Auto Museum is also inviting all member clubs to take advantage of the grassy space in back of the museum building to have meetings, BBQs, or whatever. Arnum Ambrose, the rep from the Corvette club, told me that they even had a wedding there at one time! As always, we'll try to keep you posted on the goings on in and about San Diego, if its car related. - Jim - |
