We apparently traded attendees at the August 11 SDVSA General Meeting for more members coming out to the "Back to the '50s Car Show" in La Mesa the following night, August 12! There were only nine members at the general meeting, but four did renew their membership. Are you current with yours? Check your mailing label for your expiration date, and if you aren't, mail $20 to Kurt Sievert at 11066 Corte Playa Merida, San Diego, CA. 92124. Rick Brule invited the SDVSA to have its Regular Monthly Meeting at his new place of business, GO!motors (see business card on page 11). We decided to make that January's event in 2000. Future events for the remainder of 1999 were also firmed up. As always, we are looking for a location to hold our annual Christmas Party, and any suggestions or offers will be much appreciated. Our T-shirt design is still in work, so this is the time to express your ideas for the motif. Jennifer Sigsbee won $12 in Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle, but she was not there to collect the cash, so that money remains in the jackpot. We also decided to make the following amendment to the 50/50 raffle rules. In addition to being present at the meeting when the drawing is held, if the winner leaves early, the winner has to attend the first event or meeting after the announcement in 1800 NEWS to receive the money, otherwise the winner forfeits the prize money to the club treasury. So Dan Steenerson, since this is a new rule, you are notified again. The '50s Car Show keeps getting bigger and better every year! Bud Hartwell did an excellent job of organizing SDVSA's participation, and all 13 of our cars, which were promised, showed up. Even some members with Volvo troubles (can't be) came, driving their "other" cars. We had one PV544, one 122, three 1800ESs, and the rest 1800 coupes from 1962 to 1971. Unfortunately (or fortunately according |
to some members) we had to park away from the main action -- and the noise. Some long lost faces (Ken Monson, Jim Algert, Dave Holdway, Scott Harrison, Rob Amato, Morris Blaze, et al) and cars were welcomed back and a lot of technical information was bandied about. Most of our members actually braved the large crowd and the blaring '50s music and wandered through the seven-block show. From sit-down restaurants and bars with indoor and al fresco service, to hot dog vendors on the sidewalk, no one needed go hungry. The crowd was a good mixture of young and old, and surprisingly well behaved. We had a great time, and are looking forward to a repeat performance next year! Greg Blake went all the way to Sweden to get his Volvo kicks. Read his wonderful story on page 5! British Car Day and Picnic this year takes place on Sunday, October 3 at the beautiful Fairbrook Farms in Bonsall. Early P1800, built by Jensen with Ch.# up to 6000, qualify as British cars. Early l800Ss should pass, too. Page 3 lists 'phone numbers for information. The main events in August for us was the VSA West Coast Convention in Portland, OR, reported to be bigger than any reunion in recent history. Participants from SDVSA were Bob and Del Skoog, Tony and Dorothy Brinz, Jeff Perry and Don Bair. We are expecting more details for October's 1800 NEWS. This month's event is our Second Annual Brewery Tour on September 25 under the able leadership of Jeff Perry. Last year, Jeff planned a visit to a wonderful combination of breweries and the scenic drive between the two couldn't be beat! We didn't have a very large turnout then, so let's support Jeff's efforts a little better this time. Turn the page for further details. PARTICIPATE. You Are the Club!!! |
