October 2002

Number 10

Only eight of us were at the meeting on September 11 -- the 1st anniversary of that infamous day. We could only manage three Volvos among us: -- Allan Miller's ever improving 544, replete with new white wall tires, Randy Blum's stalwart '63 120 wagon, and Kurt Sievert's S70. The financial health of the SDVSA keeps slowly improving, but the membership seems to be flagging. We only sent out 61 of our September edition of 1800 NEWS  -- the excluded members being more than 3 months in rears with their dues. So, please, keep current with your $20/year dues! You don't want to miss out on a single word of news about the 1800 and other classic Volvos!

It finally happened (sit down, Jim Barnes, before you read this)! Due to Randy Blum's diligence and perseverance, and at considerable expense to himself, the SDVSA finally has an official T-shirt! An order for appears on page 6, but you can pick yours up at any of the SDVSA's regular meetings!

Ken Monson was again the winner of Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle! How do you do it, Ken? This must be at least the fourth time! Unfortunately, Ken was not present to collect the $32 jackpot.

The squabble at the leadership level of the National VSA continues! We resolved at the meeting not to comply with the VSA's request for our chapter to submit our official membership list, until the National leadership comes to a universal membership approved statement for the direction for the national club. We feel that the VSA have to at least change some of their archaic bylaws to reflect the current wishes of those who are members of the National VSA. It also seems apparent to us that the National club has an obligation to be more involved with the local chapters, especially in the West, to earn our full support. As pointed out by this editor in the ongoing national debate; the SDVSA has existed off and on for 22 years with little, if any, support from the National VSA.

The VCOA/VSA West Coast Meet was held this year on September 6th through 8th in

Solvang, CA. None of the attendees from the SDVSA or OCVSA saw much evidence of the "great support" which was promised by Volvo Cars of North America -- or the National VSA, for that matter. All the credit for this very successful West Coast Volvo Meet must go to the VCOA and Lee Cordner as its president. Coverage of the meet begins on page 7.

Coming up, in only A COUPLE OF DAYS, is the 5
th Annual Chrysler Speed Festival, now known as the Dodge Holiday Bowl Speed Festival! It will be held on the weekend of October 12 and 13th at the Naval Air Station (NAS) on Coronado. The SDVSA will participate as a group on Sunday, October 13, when the actual races take place. Last month we established a meeting place, so we can drive into the Car Club Corral, and park together in one area. This information is repeated on the next page. We also tell you how to get entrance ticket and passes to the Corral. You'd better do it now! Any corral passes we have left will be distributed at the meeting place at Tidelands Park -- but don't count on it! Better call Bud to find out the availability of the passes. But, remember, you also need a ticket! You can probably get one at the gate -- for 5 bucks more.

A week after the Speed Festival, the OCVSA hosts the 4
th Annual All Volvo Car Show at Swedish Speed in Perris, CA. The flyer on page 3 provides a map and all the details of this fun get-together. We are hoping to get a large showing of Volvos from the SDVSA in repayment for all the great support we've received from Dave Hunt and his group of Volvo fanatics at our functions!

November's event, dubbed "Return to Santa Margarita Winery", promises to be much more than that, if our coordinator, Del Skoog, has her way! Preliminary plans call for a visit on Saturday, the 23
rd of November, to the brand new Diamond Lake dam, the winery, and lunch and sightseeing in the historic old town of Temecula.

Preliminary plans calls for the SDVSA Holiday Party to be held once more at the Auto Museum.
