Nine Volvo enthusiasts showed up at the October 13 General Meeting, with one becoming a new member of the SDVSA. Russell Orrell, our esteemed chapter coordinator, revealed preliminary information on the year 2000 West Coast Meet. It will be a combined function of VSA, VCOA, and SCCA. It's likely to take place near Sacramento or Monterey, with access to a racetrack, where club members will be able to check out the capabilities of their Volvos. Professional Volvo racers will also compete in a separate race for us to learn how it's really done. The Retromobile vintage car exhibit at the San Diego Convention Center held on Thursday 21 was a unique experience. It was sort of a mixture of an exotic, one-off, and rare car show, and an automotive antique and memorabilia sale. There were odd ball cars, such as a one-off Delehaye, a Santee Motors (?) sports car, an Autobizzarini, a Renault 4CV and many more - including a Volvo PI900 and an 1800ES! Thank you Dave Hunt and Bud Hartwell for coming through at the last minute to display your cars -- and putting up with all the hassle! A thank you also goes to Richard Messer, organizer of the Retromobile, for his patience and enthusiasm. We were the only local car club represented, but we only managed to attract four of our SDVSA members. It was a rather sma11 show in its first year, but hopefully, it will become another great San Diego tradition - as its precursor has become in Paris, France. Or just like the Chrysler Classic Speed Festival in Coronado held on |
October 23 and 24, now in its third year - and bigger and better than ever. Our SDVSA gathered four ESs, two P1800s, one 1800S, two 120s, and one P1900. The corral concept was not implemented this year either, so next year, we will meet at some convenient location and caravan into the NAS as a group. Nevertheless, it was a great day of vintage car racing by the bay! There were reportedly some 80 additional racecars this year, enough to add another class. For some other impressions of this exciting event, and of the Retromobile, turn to page 5. November's event is our annual SDVSA Swap Meet, this time on the grounds of Wes Hinkle's San Diego Volvo on Saturday, November 13, from 9.00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Turn the page for more details. David Hunt of the OCVC has worked very hard to get maximum participation from our friends in the Los Angeles area. We'd like to get as many local members of SDVSA as possible to participate in this very generous offer by Wes Hinkle, in order to foster a closer relationship between our club and San Diego Volvo! (For potential benefits, see the excellent article on page 7 in the Sept.-Oct., 1999 issue of S-E-ES). So, please stop by, even if it's only for an hour or two!! The SDVSA Christmas Party takes place at the Auto Museum on Sunday, December 19, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Preliminary details on page 3. For planning the food, please RSVP as soon as possible, and before December 10, to Mark and Diane Jankowski, at (619)479-8583. |
