It was a sight to behold at the April
10th general meeting of the SDVSA -- an olive green Volvo TP-21 rumbling into the Auto Museum parking lot on its huge all terrain tires! This impressive relic belongs to
Richard Pattee, expert on pre'60s Volvos and our new Auto Museum representative, and comes replete with instrument and knob labels and warning signs in Swedish. Richard completely restored the inline-six cylinder engine in this former Swedish Army vehicle, but the interior and outward appearance remain in the original form.
Jeff Perry, our distinguished 1800 NEWS publisher and eminent club historian, won the
$67 jackpot in Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle -- and Jeff was THERE! Jeff said that he would spend the money on "SDVSA related costs," so a big thanks from the whole club is in order. (But we won't hold you to that, Jeff!).
Mark Jankowski's famous East San Diego County Tour on Sunday, April 21, is becoming even more renowned. We had a total of 13 cars, 11 of which were Volvos, join our caravan! Gene Bellegarde brought his neat 1958 PV445 (with disc brakes all around) and Mark and Diane Jankowski set the pace throughout the tour in
her PV544 (with newly installed disc brakes in the front by Mark). In addition, there were three 120s, three 1800Ss, one ES, and, on the modern side, a V90 and a V40. The weather could not have been more perfect, although the record-breaking lack of rain this season made the countryside look like it was late summer. Instead of taking 78 up to Julian after our obligatory stop at Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel, we went on State Hwy 79 north, along the eastern shore of Lake Henshaw, arriving in Warner Hot Springs at about 12:30 p.m. We watched the operations at the local glider airfield for awhile, and then proceeded onto Sunshine Summit, and had an excellent
comida at La Cocina Mexican restaurant. After lunch, although the tour was over, the adventure continued as each of us found our way home. Look for a wrap-up of this event on
page 5. Thank you, Mark and Diane, for another unique look at San Diego County's "Gold."

On Sunday, April 28, VCOA held its West Coast meet in Davis, CA., - and on April 29,
Bob Skoog and Dave Barton, took on Thunderhill Raceway! Bob went around the track about 15 laps, until it got too wet. Then he thought quitting was the better part of valor for his already injured 1800. Thank you, Dave, for reporting on this worthwhile experience on
page 7.
Don't forget the San Diego Auto Museum Car Club Council's 3rd Annual Car Show on
Saturday, May 11, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the museum parking lot. Last year, they attracted more than 70 cars - but only one Volvo, a '64 1800. So bring your classic Volvo, and let's have a more fair representation of the size of our SDVSA club.
Although the 37th Fallbrook Classic Car Show on
Sunday, May 26, will not have a special class for our Volvos in spite of
Darwyn Lumley's efforts, a good showing of cars from the SDVSA, OCVSA, and So. Cal. VSA would go a long way to garner that recognition. Another thing that would impress the powers that be at the show would be for us to enter the grounds as a group. To accomplish this, we have decided to meet on the northwest corner of the intersection of I-15 and State Hwy 76. All the information about the show and the meeting place are given on pages 5. Please fill out the application form you received in April's
1800 NEWS, and send it in before the deadline. This is one of the biggest and oldest car shows in the North County, and, if you like classic automobiles, you won't be disappointed!
Coming up on Saturday, June 22, is the 10th Annual Menghini Wine Party and Horseshoe Tournament! Following the success of the last three years, we are inviting other car clubs to share the grass of Mike and Menghini's apple orchard. Aside from such veteran clubs as OCVSA, So. Cal. VSA, the Austin-Healey Club of San Diego and the SAAB Organization from L.A., we've also invited the Sunbeam Club of San Diego this year. So make your plans now to enjoy the outdoors splendor of Julian!
