Sadly, we have to report another loss to the SDVSA family. Harry Stevenson passed away at the end of January, 2001, after a long illness. We will miss Harry’s dry sense of humor and his willingness to take on challenges. He was a great asset to the club, and we feel privileged to have known him -- alas, for too brief a time. Did you know Volvo crash test dummies have a love life? Well, we were clued in at our General Meeting on February 15, at the Boll Weevil on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. They even take their dates on exiting drives in brand new Volvos, which usually end in a variety of horrific crashes. But they bounce back for more! Ten SDVSA members finally got to see this much talked about Volvo produced video, which Dave Hunt originally brought to last December’s general meeting, when we were locked out of the Auto Museum building. In spite of all the noise and commotion which is inherent in short order eating places, we were able to carry on our business meeting…on full stomachs this time. Lara Mia Phillips brought some more info on the continuing Saga of the smog exemptions for older cars. Before you throw this newsletter out, please read the material on page 9 and fill out and send in the survey on page 10! Some more relevant information is presented on page 11. That ”Gentleman of Leisure…and all around good fellow”, Michael Hosking, won Bob Skoog’s 50/50 raffle, but he was not present to collect the $27 prize. As usual, the money stays in the pot for someone else to win,…if they are present at the meeting, that is. The inclement weather actually worked to our advantage at the SDVSA Lunch on Saturday, February 24 by the Oceanside waterfront. Parking was certainly not a problem, and we did not have to wait to be seated at Ruby’s. We had a nice - albeit rather small - cross section of 1800s, with a ’63 P, a pair of Ss, one ’64 and one ‘69, a ’72 E, and a ’73 ES. Dramatically located at the very end of Oceanside pier, like a ship on the windswept Pacific, Ruby’s on this day provided a safe |
and cozy refuge for our eight Volvo fanatics. We indulged in clam chowder, old fashion sandwiches and fries, ice cream sundaes, cherry cokes, wine, and Sam Adams beer. As promised, there was a lot of Volvo talk….but, strangely, no mention was made of politics or religion! Look on page 5 for Russ Orrell’s good natured report on this event. On page 6 you will find our next installment of Darwyn Lumley’s survey of Volvo related items in Road & Track, covering the period 1963 to 1967.
As advertised in 1800 NEWS, Bob
Skoog’s hobby of fixing overdrives has developed into a professional
endeavor. Read Jeff Perry’s exposé, starting on page
7, about Bob’s
considerable efforts in providing this long awaited service to the classic
Volvo community. Another exciting annual SDVSA event is just around the corner, so be sure to make plans for participating in Del Skoog’s Temecula Wine Tour on Sunday, March 25! Once more Del has gone out of her way to make this year’s tour interesting – come rain or shine. The next page reveals her carefully laid plans for another great wine tour. Dave Hunt’s OCVSA is celebrating its Second Anniversary with a party at Swedish Speed in Perris, CA., on April 8, and every Volvo fan in Southern California is invited! The festivities will get under way at 9:00, and refreshments will be served. Part of this event will take place at the March Air Force Base Air Museum., and the group will caravan the short distance to the base, leaving at around 10:00. Coming up on Saturday, April 21, is Mark Jankowski’s San Diego East County Tour. This year’s trek is going to be biased towards the northern regions of the county, to reward our loyal following from the OCVSA and the Los Angeles area. Mark has a knack for finding interesting places to visit and adventuresome ways to get there. Be sure to join your club on this always excellent tour. |
