We had 11, and two new, members show up at our Pizza ’n’ Video event at the General Meeting on May 9. Our membership still stands at 74, but Kurt Sievert, our Membership Coordinator, gleefully displayed eight checks from new and renewing members, on their way to Bob Skoog, our club treasurer. Rick Brulé had wasted no time in assuming the duties of the SDVSA’s representative to the Auto Museum Car Club Council. He gave a full report on the goings on at the museum and future events, which all need our support. In that vein, we voted unanimously to renew the club’s museum membership. As usual, the meeting ended with Bob Skoog’s 50/50 raffle, and the winner of the $38 was Casey Moore. Unfortunately, he was not present to collect the money, so it goes back into the pot for some fortunate member, who comes to the meetings, to win. The 36th Annual Fallbrook Vintage Car Show on the Memorial Day weekend, our May event, was a surprising success, despite the weather. Representing the SDVSA, we had a pair of 122 wagons, belonging to Randy Blum and Nick Hall, Brad Benson’s 1800ES, and the “temporary editor’s” 1800S. Besides, there was a 1965 PV544 present, as well, owned by a non-club member. Brad said, that in the last two years, his ES was the only Volvo there. Other members of the SDVSA were showing their beautiful American classics. Royce Dunn was there with his immaculate 1930 Graham, as was Darwyn Lumley with his impressive, big black 1946 Lincoln. Royce’s car won “Best of Show”, and Darwin first in his class, so congratulations are in order for both! Some more SDVSA members who were found strolling among the outstanding examples of the auto collectors’ art, were Scott and Dawn Harrison (long time, no see), and, of course, out inimitable jack of all trades, Jeff Perry, with his camera at the ready. We will plan on attending this event again next year as a club. If we get more |
participation, which we probably will if the weather is better, we’ll see if we want to add the Fallbrook Auto Show as a yearly club event From Dave Hunt, and later confirmed by Bud Hartwell, we understand that Volvo Cars of North America wants to have the 1800 represented at the Historical Races at Monterey, in conjunction with the Pebble Beach Concours on the weekend of August 17 – 19. This year, 2001, is the 40th Anniversary of the beginning of production of the Volvo P1800, 1800S, E, and ES. Lee Cordner of VCOA received an email from Byron Farnsworth, part of which follows;
”Looks like Volvo will be
officially at Monterey Historics (Laguna Seca Raceway infield display
area) [to recognize the 40th anniversary of the P1800].
Don’t know just what the actual
event will entail as we are working out the display space/special Volvo
parking details with Steve Earle at this time. BUT…As a heads up if you,
or anyone, specifically P1800 owners, are planning on attending, get your
room reservations now." The idea is to have as many 1800s represented as possible. The Pebble Beach Concours takes place on the weekend before that VSA/VCOA West Coast Meet in Vancouver, BC, - think about the possibilities of caravanning to both events! We’ll discuss the SDVSA participation at the next several general meetings, as more details become available. On June 23rd, it’s time to return to Mike and Toni Menghini’s apple orchard in Julian for our 9th Annual Menghini Wine Fest and Horseshoe Tournament. You certainly don’t want to miss this exciting SDVSA yearly event, so make your plans now! We anticipate at least a hand-full of Austin-Healeys, and some SAAB Sonetts, to join us. Look on the following page for times and meeting places. PARTICIPATE – YOU ARE THE CLUB! |
