June 2002

Number 6

Eight members made it to the General Meeting of the SDVSA on May 8th. Although this is less than usual, the representation of classic Volvos in the parking lot was not; ranging from Richard Pattee's '57 PV444, two 1800Ss, and two 120s, to Kurt Sievert's red S70.

Our club website, www.sdvsa.org, is very popular, judging by the fact that we received over 30,000 hits in one month! Little wonder, then, that Jeff Perry, our webmaster (and historian), has some concerns whenever our website is offline. It has happened frequently lately. Since our contract with the provider is up in June, we authorized Jeff to look for a more reliable company.

Bill Jacobs was the winner of Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle -- and had he been there, he would have walked away $40 richer!

San Diego Auto Museum Car Club Council's had its 3
rd Annual Car Show on Saturday, May 11, between 19:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the museum parking lot. Representing the SDVSA was Randy Blum with his great '63 120 wagon and the editor of 1800 NEWS with his white '64 1800S. About 65 cars were entered in four classes, which consisted of pre-1928 (which did not have any entries), 1928 - 1944, 1945 - 1973, and 1974 - present. Unfortunately, the third class included around 60% of the entries, and therefore, the "people's choice," which was the only basis for the awards in each class, became really difficult. There were a wide variety of beautiful cars, with the most outstanding being Royce Dunn's 1930 Graham, which won the Judges Award, and the most unusual being a 1950s Toyota 800 Sport, a really neat little sports car!

   The 37
th Fallbrook Classic Car Show on Sunday, May 26, was the SDVSA's monthly event. Early reports are that the idea was not popular with the Volvo crowd. Seems like only one SDVSA/OCVSA member, Brad Benson, showed his gorgeous ES. At least two other "non-club" Volvos were displayed -- a multi-colored 122, and the red 544, which was there last year. A yellow P1800 was also spotted in the parking lot,

and all bets are that it belonged to Darwyn Lumley, an SDVSA member who is intimately involved with the organization of the Annual Fallbrook Classic Car Show.

Due to the encouraging participation without much prodding of the SDVSA/OCVSA members last year, we believed that we could entice more Volvo owners to show this year. We apologize for not making a greater effort and succeeding in more effectively organizing and communicating our desires.

Coming up on Saturday, June 22, is the 10
th Annual Menghini Wine Party and Horseshoe Tournament! Following the success of the last three years, we are inviting other car clubs to share the green grass and the shade of Mike and Toni Menghini's apple orchard. Aside from such veteran clubs as OCVSA, So. Cal. VSA, and the Austin-Healey Club of San Diego and the SAAB Organization from L.A., we've also invited the Sunbeam Owner's Group this year. So make your plans now to enjoy the outdoors splendor of Julian! We'll meet at COCO's at 1280 West Valley Parkway, just west of I-15, in Escondido. For more details, drivel, and maps, just turn the page.

Special Notice! We'll have another "Pizza 'n' Videos" session at our July 10th General Meeting at the Auto Museum in Balboa Park, starting at 6:30 p.m. If you have a car related video (or just a funny one) that you want to share with the club -- bring it!

The Association of California Car Clubs (ACCC) recently held its annual meeting, and some of the issues discussed were:   Some members of our state legislature continue in the effort to pass laws against the collector car hobbyists. One would require all vehicles older than 5 years to be smogged and pass whatever the current standard is for the current year! Also noted was that cars are 5th or 6th on the list of pollution sources, which is headed by airplanes and then boats, but cars are easier to monitor. As always, it is imperative that the car hobbyists stay in touch with their representatives!
