Fourteen SDVSA members took advantage of the beautiful summer evening to get out of the house and attend June’s general meeting. If you haven’t visited the SDVSA web site, sdvsa.org, lately, do so. Articles from past issues of 1800 NEWS are now available on-line.
Remember, the SDVSA also has the month of October
reserved at the Auto Museum for displaying two of our cars at a time. They
are going to be at the northeast corner of the main exhibit hall. Bud
Hartwell has already volunteered his beautiful ’72 ES, but we would
like to have at least a couple of more models of Volvos, in reasonably
good shape, available. The cars don’t have to be in show room condition,
and the duration of the display of any car can vary on a weekly basis. We
also noticed in the summer issue of San Diego Automotive Museum News that
someone has donated a ”1965 Volvo custom roadster.” We wonder what
that’s all about! And, for the parents of the junior members of our
club, there are some exciting museum events coming up; ”Auto Adventure
Camp”, July 30–Aug 3, (619) 231-2886 and ”What a way to GO!”, Aug
6–10, (619) 234-8291, Ext.19. Our SDVSA June event was the 9th Annual Menghini Wine Fest and Horseshoe Tournament. We have never had so many participants at breakfast at COCO’s, and the caravan heading towards Santa Ysabel was 11 cars long. Aside from a P1800, two 1800Ss, and an 1800ES, we attracted Dave Hunt’s inimitable P1900, a PV544, a 122, two 245s, a beautiful Jensen-Healey, and a gorgeous and rare ’62, Type 3, Karmann-Ghia, converted to a convertible. At Dudley’s Bakery, we were joined by an 1800E and a 122 wagon, three SAAB Sonetts and two 9xs, and ’57 Austin-Healey with a great looking Cobra V8 engine installation. Then, it was on to Mike & Toni Menghini’s apple orchard just north of Julian by way of the winding Wynola Road. |
Before the day was over, we had been joined by another PV544 and an additional 245 – and, serendipitously, four DeLoreans (with the Volvo PRV V-6 engines), for a total of 25 cars! A complete list of participants in this great event, and some excellent photos by Jeff Perry of it, can be found on page 5. Additional news on the 1800 40th anniversary presentation at the Historical Races at Monterey, in conjunction with the Pebble Beach Concours on the weekend of August 17 – 19; We hear that plans ARE going ahead to have a display of 1800s in the infield of the Laguna-Seca racetrack. If you bring an 1800, the tickets are free, but you have to pick them up at the Monterey Hyatt hotel. The show, which is going to take place between 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, will feature, among other things, a special presentation to Irv Gordon and his 2 million mile ’66 1800S.
The Pebble Beach Concours takes place on the weekend before that VSA/VCOA West Coast Meet in Vancouver, BC. About half a dozen members from the San Diego have reportedly expressed an interest in attending this event. Caravans will be available. All Jensen factory built 1800s, (and later 1800 models, too) are invited to the 13th Jensen National Convention at the Bahia Resort Hotel during the week of August 27 – 30. This is a real big shindig, and the fee is $135 / person for the whole weeks program! Call Bob Adams (858)487-6371 or Bruce & Leonora Briges (760)942-2305 for details on daily events and registration forms. If you enjoy green grass and cool, ocean breezes in the midst of typical San Diego summer weather, join our SDVSA for a traditional swap meet at Crown Point in Mission Bay Park.
