February 2002

Number 2

   Since our treasurer and keeper of the 50/50 raffle jackpot, Bob Skoog, was not in attendance at our January General Meeting, the rest of the ten members who were present decided not to have the drawing. Therefore, the pot remains at $58.50. Maybe YOU can win it, and more, if you come to the next meeting.

   If you did not get an updated source list in January, we apologize. To get one, contact Kurt Sievert at any of the addresses or 'phone number in "The Box" on page 3. If you have any additions, whether you had a good or bad experience with a vendor or service establishment, let us know, so we can make the list even more comprehensive.

   The OCVSA sponsored Tech Session at Bob Workman's European Auto, on Sunday, January 20, just keeps getting better! Close to 40 (!) eager Volvo fans gathered for words of wisdom from our resident mechanical guru, Bob Workman. Even a good number of our female members joined the fray. If you work on your own car and weren't there, you missed out on some real gems. Bob demonstrated how to do a proper tune-up on a '67 1800S with a conventional ignition system and twin SUs. Among other things, we learned how to diagnose improperly sealing valves and rings by listening for escaping air at various points of the engine during a leak down test. We were all famished from working so hard paying attention, so before Bob put the final touches on the tune-up, we indulged in a feast of BBQed "varm korv" (hot dogs in Swedish) with all kinds of delicious condiments, provided by Bob and Cindy. After lunch, Bob finished the tune-up and then started the engine -- it purrrred like the proverbial well-fed kitten. Just as we did -- out of satisfaction! Thank You, Bob and Cindy, for being such considerate hosts!

  Coming up this weekend, Saturday, February 16, is the not to be missed Temecula Valley Winery Tour. Del Skoog has been working extra hard this year to make the Tour interesting and exciting,

so don't disappoint her (and the rest of us) by not showing up! She even promised to have some surprises for us! For details of her plans, turn the page.

   NOTE 1! Steer Burgers 'n' Videos! The General Meeting on Wednesday, March 13 will be held at the Boll Weevil on 9330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., starting at 6:30 p.m. (In meetings past, someone said he had a craving for a Steer Burger instead of pizza!). We will present Volvo related videos.

   NOTE 2! For all members of National VSA: The last vote for National Officers got all screwed up. According to Dave Hunt, the VSA only received 60 returned ballots! The reason, Dave thinks, is that he and most members never even got ballots in the September-October issue of S-E-ES. A new ballot is available in the just published November-December issue, and the SDVSA, OCVSA and Bill Webb's So. Cal. VSA endorses the following candidates:

   President; - John Holtzapple
   Vice-president; - Bob Berglund
   Secretary; - Toni Van Loan
   Treasurer; - Norm Brainin
   Board Members;
            Karl Grimm        Bill Arey
            Gary Sievert      Jerry Sira
            Joan Illys

   It is very important for us to vote for these totally involved people to make sure the West Coast receives proper attention in the National VSA.

   NOTE 3! Some changes in the Schedule of Events (see page 3) have taken place. Since the participation by our club in the Fallbrook Vintage Car Show and Swap Meet was fairly respectable last year, we decided to make that our event for May (Sunday 26), and postpone our 10th Annual Menghini Winery Party until June (Saturday 22). More about these events in future issues of 1800 NEWS, of course.
