December 1999

Number 12

We were 15 members strong at the meeting on November 10 - our latest Pizza 'n' Video evening. Gene Bellegarde brought his Volvo 210 Duett, which made all of us take notice. Other than that - and a lonely 1800S - seems like everyone opted for driving his or her 240 Volvo or a truck! We spent a considerable amount of time critiquing the beautifully colored designs for our "T"-shirt, and Randy Blum is going to convey the minor changes to the artist. After assembling the newsletter, the pizza finally arrived after much ado, and we got down to business of the videos - and gorging. Bob Workman brought a video shot by Evan Prick of the "ipd Track Day" at this year's VSA West Coast Convention in Portland. It was an impressive sight to see all the sporty looking Volvos lined up to enter, and perform on, the track. We saw Bob Skoog's, Jeff Perry's, and Tony and Dorothy Brinz's cars on the track. Rob Arnato brought an old video, which showed some well attended SDVSA meets, such as the Palomar Observatory trip in October of 1992 and the North County Winery Tour in October of 1993. Mike Ruksenas won Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle of $25, but was not at the meeting to collect the money, so that sum goes back into the pot for someone else in attendance to win!

November's event was our annual SDVSA Swap Meet, for the first time on the grounds of Wes Hinkle's San Diego Volvo, on Saturday, November 13, from 9.00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We had 14 classic Volvos show up. One 544, one 210 Duett, one 122, four 1800Ss, three Es, and four ESs. There were

also a number of 240s, and some other "lesser" autos. Art Banks, Richard Bensen, and Glen Swanson brought their beautiful trio of ESs down from various parts of L.A., and, of course, Dave Hunt was there -- alas sans his P1900. It was a great turnout for this first event at San Diego Volvo, and we attracted quite a few ohhhs and ahhhs from the regular customers. Unfortunately, some of the San Diego Volvo staff was under the impression that it was a car show, and not a swap meet. That issue needs some clarification before the next time. We nevertheless want to express our sincere thanks to Wes Hinkle for making his dealership available to the SDVSA -- in either capacity .And to Steve Arbantes, who was Russ Orrell's, and the SDVSA's, contact man at San Diego Volvo, and to Richard Limon, grounds manager, who fussed over us and made us feel right at home. We are hoping that with a little better organization, this will become an annual event on par with the West Coast VSA organized Westside Volvo's annual swap meet in Culver City.

The SDVSA Christmas Party takes place at the Auto Museum on Sunday, December 19, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. More details on the next page. For planning the food, please RSVP as soon as possible, and before December 10, to Mark and Diane Jankowski, at (619)479-8583. They will keep track of what everyone is bringing in the way "of food -- so we don't end up with 243 servings of lutfisk (dried and cooked cod fish) or inlagd sill (pickled herring)!! So, come and join your SDVSA for some fun and holiday cheer!
