Suave, although a little dated, action entertained the participants at the June
10th SDVSA general meeting, as Simon Templar, alias "The Saint", engineered a bloodless coup in a fictitious South American country. However, no sequences showing the 1800 were included in this story. The lure of pizza and videos, and free suds and sodas, increased our numbers somewhat, but only managed to attract 11 members, including
Edward Zeranski, the proud owner of a '62 PV544, who singed on at the meeting.
Kurt Sievert, our membership coordinator, reported that the SDVSA currently has
68 members.
Richard Pattee, our club's representative to the San Diego Auto Museum Car Club Council, has requested that our members submit questions about smog legislation and other issues pertaining to the classic car hobby, to which he can get some clarification from the Council.
The SDVSA world famous Swap Meet took place on Sunday, July 21, at Crown Point in Mission Bay.
Bud Hartwell was there at 7:00 a.m. to claim a spot for the club, with his treasure trove of new and used classic Volvo parts in the back of his pristine '72 ES. Also at reveille was
Richard Pattee, with his 1956 Volvo TP21 (pictured above, and story on
page 9), "Suggan" (the Sow) Swedish Army radio and command vehicle, one of around 720 built.
Ed Zeranski with his '62 PV544 was also one of the early arrivals, as was
Dave Dempsey, all the way from San Clemente, looking for parts for his newly acquired '68 1800S. That perfect, black, Volvo 262 Bertone, belonging to
Dan Palmquist, trunk loaded to the gills with chrome wheels and assorted parts and service manuals, caught the attention of all present. Among other OCVSA members present were
Dave Hunt and Ted Brough, arriving in Ted's red Urban Assault Vehicle. Two more long distance travelers were
Dough Wilson in his beautiful '63 PV544, and stalwart Brad Benson in his impressive '72 ES. Other local members attending were
Mark and Diane Jankowski; Kurt Seivert, who walked away with an 1800

horn button from Bud's collection; Vern
Clevenley, looking for parts for his '72 ES; and Goran Freske…just looking.
Jeff Perry, who was busy at work, got there just in time to shoot the pictures you can see on
page 7. The session broke up at about 2:00 p.m., with ol' "Suggan", whose lights and engine startups had been demonstrated once too often, requiring a boost from Bud's ES battery to get it under way.
The VSA/VCOA West Coast Meet to be held this year in Solvang, CA., promises to be very special. This year marks the
75th anniversary of the start of production of Volvo cars and trucks. Volvo Cars of North America has decided to transfer their support from the Historic Car Races at Laguna-Seca, to the
VSA/VCOA West Coast Meet on September 5th through 7th at Solvang! Since Solvang is within an easy day's drive from San Diego, we decided to make this our September event. More information about the place and time are shown on page 2, and an application to partake in the car show is on page 3. Anyone interested in joining a caravan should contact
Bob Skoog at (760)728-5328, sisku@nctimes.net; or, for members who live in L.A., Orange County, Hemet, and other points north, contact
Dave Hunt at (714)630-2207, volvodrdave@earthlink.net
The 5th Annual Chrysler Speed Festival, now known as the Dodge Holiday Bowl Speed
Festival, will be held on the weekend of October 12 and 13th at the Naval Air Station (NAS) on Coronado. The SDVSA will participate as a group on
Sunday, October 13, when the actual races take place. In order to ensure maximum participation of our club and all Southern California Volvo clubs, a reminder appears on page 5. This month we have established a meeting place, so we can drive into the Car Club Corral, and park, as a group. We also tell you how to get entrance ticket and passes to the Corral. If you have been reluctant to participate in other club events, don't miss this one! It's not often you can see and touch (veeery carefully!) multi-million dollar classic
cars,…and watch them race, fender to fender.
