Our Pizza 'n' Video (and free beer and/or sodas) Monthly Meeting on July 14 was a definite success. Fifteen members and one potential member (that's about 25% of the club) came to enjoy the further adventures of "The Saint". In this episode, the bobbies were actually driving Simon Templar's 1800, chasing "The Saint" after he had committed a fake burglary and was making his getaway in their police car, which, of course, was no match for the Volvo! We had an assemblage in the parking lot of seven 1800s, one 120 wagon, one 544, and sundry 240's. Great showing! (One of the 1800s is for sale, and its ad appears on page 11). On the subject of videos, Scott Hinkle from San Diego Volvo donated a large number of Volvo videos to our SDVSA Club. Thank you, Scott, and San Diego Volvo. Dan Steenerson won $26 in Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle. Even though he left before the drawing, he was present at the meeting, thus fulfilling the qualifying requirements. So, Dan, don't forget to collect your prize money! If the "Pizza 'n' Video" turnout was great success, our Tech Session at Bob Workman's European Auto was an even "huger" great success. As a matter of fact, the attendance broke all records for a tech session! We had around twenty die hard Volvo fans watching, asking questions, and making constructive comments while Bob Workman demonstrated how to rebuild the 120/1800 steering box. A worn-out box was used to show the disassembly procedure, and faulty components from that and other boxes were used to point out various flaws. Then Bob assembled another box -- that had been taken apart and painstakingly cleaned and painted by Bob Skoog -- with new bearings and seals. Read Kurt Sievert's step by step account of the proceedings on page 5, |
and view some of the photos on page 6, taken by Jeff Perry of this event. Thanks to all involved! Bob Workman offered to conduct other workshops in the future, and we are more than ready to take him up on the offer! David Hunt, president of the new Orange County Volvo Club (OCVC), has again submitted his July newsletter, which appears on page 4. Therein he not only gives his summary of the just mentioned tech session, but also of the VCOA gathering in Santa Rosa. Kudos go to every SDVSA participant!!!! By the time this 1800 NEWS is in your hot little hands, we hope that you enjoyed the "Back to the '50s Car Show" which took place on Thursday, August 12, in La Mesa. Bud Hartwell has had calls from 11 members showing an interest. More about our experiences at the show in next month's issue. The main events in August are the VSA East and West Coast Conventions (see page 2). Some of our members are going to make the trek to Portland, OR. If you want to join a caravan from the San Diego area, talk to Bob Skoog at (760)728-5328, or from the L.A. area, call Dave Hunt at (714)630-2207. It's always a good idea to caravan for safety's sake, but the trouble is, people would like to leave at different times, and plan their routes in various ways. Next month's event is our second annual brewery tour under the able leadership of Jeff Perry. Last year, Jeff planned a visit to a wonderful combination of breweries and the scenic drive between the two couldn't be beat! We didn't have a very large turnout last year, so let's support Jeff's efforts a little better this time. |
