April 1998

Number 4

Bloomin' Deserts don't happen that often, as anyone who has been a member of the SDVSA for the last two or three years well know. Three years running we've been skunked! Yet, at the last general meeting on March 11th, the fifteen (15!) attendees voted to try our luck on Sunday, April 19, whether it's bloomin' or not! For more details on this yearly event, please turn the page. The Sunday Brunch idea also took flight at the March meeting, so we'll meet on May 3rd at Amelio's Bistro, located at the Four Points Hotel on 8110 Aero Drive, at 12:30 p.m. This restaurant and brunch come highly recommended by our fellow SDVSA member and coordinator, Harry Stevenson, and you can read all the details about this event on page 3. We are also planning to make our June 10 General Meeting at the Auto Museum into a chance for every member to see one or two of the videos acquired by your club. By popular vote, we'll show the History Channel's "Volvo Story" and/or episodes of the six action packed 1800 adventures with "The Saint" on the big screen available in the meeting room! Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle was won by Richard Hellman, who, unfortunately, was not in attendance to gather up his very abundant winnings of $45.00! Don't you think this is the right time for you to be at the next meeting and try your luck?!

At 7:15 in the morning of Sunday, March 22nd, four 1800s met at the Chevron gas station between Pea Soup Andersen's wind mill and the beautiful Flower Fields. After everyone had a cup of java, we formed a caravan with Scott and Dawn Harrison in the lead, making good time to our second rendezvous point on our trek; - the Beacon gas station on La Paz Ave.

There, another five sporty Volvos were waiting for us - all belonging to SDVSA members! I'll let Greg Blake pick up the story from here (page 9 ) on our further progress towards Wheels 'n' Wings. Everyone in attendance, I am sure, would like to compliment Greg Blake and Dave Hunt for their superb planning of this event and their unflagging enthusiasm. Many thanks to you two, and to all the participants.

Then there was a big Volvo-to-do in Tempe, Arizona, on April 4 with two P1900s taking center stage! In honor of this event, a P1900 is depicted on top of this page, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the limited production (only 67 made) Volvo Sports. Early reports from Bob Skoog indicate that it was a huge success. Hopefully, someone who attended that event will clue the rest of us in with a short (or even a long) article in next month's 1800 NEWS.

Our SDVSA club has also been invited to a special preview of the newest show at the San Diego Auto Museum called "The Story of the Sports Car" on Friday, April 24! Looks like it's going to be a great and interesting event! More about that on p. 5.

There is a lot happening in the world of Volvos lately. Half this issue is made up of events notices, and that's only a part of the planned activities! We are going to be busy little beavers if we attend them all. We apologize to the people who submitted materials that were left out of this month's issue - but don't give up!! Keep 'em coming. We still need ads, and they don't have to be car related. Remember, they are free to paid-up members.
